Principal’s Pen – March 2, 2018

Preschool Open House & Registration Sunday, March 4 from 2-4 pm in Manning Hall.
Preschool Parents are invited to meet the teachers, tour the Preschool, meet other Parents (Ambassadors) and have adult conversations while their children play with our 7th & 8th grade Student Ambassadors in the absorbing and fun preschool classroom. Spread the word about our Preschool Open House. Let’s fill those rooms with the joy of children.

IOWA Test of Basic Skills is a nationally standardized test that is administered to grades 3, 5 7 & 8 each year. The tests give us an indicator of not only WHAT students have learned but also HOW they learn. For many years the test was given in Septmeber. This year the test has shifted to the spring to be inline with the testing timetable in the public schools. Students will remain with the homeroom teachers in 7 & 8th grades and will not switch classes to allow for a smooth testing format. All students will have their regular special teachers(art, music, etc.), lunch, recess and ‘brain breaks’ with activities during each day. We anticipate testing Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and next Monday, March 12.
Please make sure your child has a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast and two #2 pencils with good erasers. Results should be received shortly after Easter and will be shared with parents.
St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Scholars, Pray for us!

Today is the end of the Third Quarter! Report cards will be available for Parent viewing by Friday, March 9 on Fast Direct.

Congratulations and blessings to our 8th graders who received the sacrament of Confirmation last Sunday.

Warm-Up Winter! We still have a few weeks of winter left and many among us in our parish and surrounding community need blankets to keep warm. Yes, here. Right here! During the next two weeks of Lent, Ss. Peter & Paul School will hold a blanket drive asking each family to donate a blanket. Blankets can be throws, baby, any bed size – even gently used but clean ones are welcomed. Bring your blankets to school for our Winter Warm Up through Friday, March 9. Thank you, SSPP Youth Group , for supervising the collection.

The Knights of Columbus is hosting their Pancake Breakfast right here in our Fellowship Hall on Sunday, March 18 to benefit our own Tuition Assistance Program. The KCs are asking for 8-10 adults to help serve and 4-6 students to bus tables for this event from 9 am – 12:30 pm. Call the school office if you can give an hour or two to help the KCs help us! Family help is welcome!

Empower Illinois Scholarship Application is a Two-step process:
1. Reserve: On Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. families will complete a brief online form containing name and contact information, child name and preferred school. This will time stamp your application for the first-come, first-served scholarships.
2. Apply: After reserving your place in line, families will be emailed a unique link and use their reservation code to complete the application. Applications will be sent on a rolling basis, over the course of a few weeks. After receiving the application email, families will have 3 days to complete the application and submit all required documents.
This two-step process is to make it easier for families and provide more time to ensure your application is accurate and complete. The reservation system will be accessible from mobile devices as well. Parents should reserve and apply through this system beginning Feb. 27, regardless of how far you may have gotten through our old application.

REMINDERS:
• Field Trips are coming soon! All chaperones, coaches, volunteers must complete the Protecting God’s Children program to participate. This program will be presented here at Ss. Peter and Paul on Tuesday, March 13 at 6:30 pm and on Saturday, March 17 at 8:30 am in Morris Hall. You only need to attend this program one time.

Blessings,
